Life Without a Toenail (Addressing Regrowth)

Many patients ask us: If you remove the nail, is it gone forever?

At Harley Medical Foot and Nail Clinic, the answer depends on the goal of your treatment. For some, we remove the nail to allow a healthy one to grow in its place. For others, especially those who have suffered chronic nail conditions for years, we perform a permanent removal to ensure the pain never returns.

If you are opting for nail removal surgery in London, here is the reality of the recovery and what your toe will actually feel like.

The Choice: Temporary vs. Permanent

During your consultation, we discuss whether to apply a chemical called Phenol. Without it, your nail will begin the slow process of growing back.

However, if the nail was removed due to severe, last resort fungal damage or a permanent deformity, we often recommend cauterising the root via additional laser treatment. This stops the chunky, painful nail from returning, leaving you with a smooth, hassle-free toe.

What Does the Skin Feel Like?

Initially, the nail bed is delicate. Without a nail plate for protection, it may feel sensitive to the touch. This is why we use specialised dressings in the first week.

However, your body is remarkably adaptive.

Within a few weeks, the skin undergoes keratinisation. It toughens up and becomes resilient, much like the skin on the tip of your finger.

What are the Long-Term Expectations?

Regardless of whether you are waiting for a new nail or are opting for going without a nail permanently, the end result is always immediate in that you are relieved from the pain and discomfort of your diseased nail. When you are fully healed, you are able to wear regular footwear, swim, and even engage in physical activity without worrying about your nail causing you pain. For those opting for going without a nail permanently, you are able to have a clean and a resolved toe condition that no longer requires surgical treatment.
